We decided that we needed to stay at Badian, Cebu a night before our Cebu Canyoneering activity since we knew that it will be a tiring activity. We asked for referrals with Kawasan Canyoneering if there is any place where we could stay for the night and they recommended Matutinao Beach Resort. They also gave the number of the resort, so we got in contact with them, reserved a room and enjoyed our stay. Not only is Matutinao Beach Resort a beach front resort, it is also the starting point of the Cebu Canyoneering, which is a really good for us.
Update August 21, 2018: There have been a lot of improvements in Matutinao Beach Resort. You can visit their Facebook Page to see the updated details.

Matutinao Beach Resort
Journey to Matutinao Beach Resort from Moalboal
12:05 PM After our beacheneering at White Beach in Moalboal, we were now riding a bus to Badian, Cebu. We told the bus conductor to drop us off at Matutinao Beach Resort. Luckily, he knows where that is so we could relax a bit on our bus ride.

Bus from Moalboal to Matutinao Beach Resort, Badian
12:30 PM (Travel Time 25 minutes, Fare 20 Pesos/person) The bus stopped what seems to be a really huge parking lot with a modern church. And then it started again, habal-habal drivers came flocking at us asking if we were doing the Canyoneering Activity. We just told them that we already had reservations with Kawasan Canyoneering ang Matutinao Beach Resort and they all dispersed.

Arrival at Matutinao Beach Resort
When we got down I was wondering where the resort was located as I do not see any cottages or rooms. It turns out we were on the same side of the road with Matutinao Beach Resort. It was just covered by leaves. We walked a little and found the entrance.

Matutinao Beach Resort
We went to their huge dining hall where we saw some Canyoneers just ended their activity and were eating lunch. The reception area is in the dining hall, we asked them for our reservations and they verified it and told us to wait for a while as they fix the room. Since we had free time, we also verified with Kawasan Canyoneering our reservation.

Around the Resort
Anyways, here are pictures around Matutinao Beach Resort.

Right after you go down the steps of the entrance.

The big dining hall. Also serves as the starting area for the Canyoneering.

The beach

The beach, cottages and dining hall.

A bathroom or comfort room outside where daytrip Canyoneers could use.

Fan rooms

Bathroom and CR of the fan rooms.
The fan rooms do not have a comfort room inside the room. One should go outside and use the external comfort room to do their thing.
If you are interested in availing the fan room their rates when we were there are.
- 1,500 Pesos/room/night – if you are not availing of the Canyoneering
- 1,000 Pesos/room/night – if availing of the Canyoneering with Kawasan Canyoneering
I’m not sure though how many people could stay inside a room as all rooms were occupied that day.
Aircon Room
We availed of the Aircon Room. The room was pretty basic. Two beds – One for 2 persons, one for a single person. Since we were 4 in our group we asked for an extra mattress which they gave without extra charge.
By the way, the rates when we stayed there for the Aircon Room was.
- 2,500 Pesos/room/night – if not availing of Canyoneering
- 1,500 Pesos/room/night – if availing of Canyoneering with Kawasan Canyoneering

Aircon Cottages

Inside the room (Panorama)
The center right door is for the bathroom. The center left door is the entrance from the outside. The door on the rightmost is for the veranda.

Panorama

Bathroom
I was really glad at the bathroom since it really had a strong water pressure.

Entrance to the room.

Veranda
We actually shared the veranda with the other room. Lucky for us since there was no one staying at the other room. This was also the place where we stayed the most since we wanted to feel some sea breeze while chatting.
Electric Sockets & Mobile Network
There were 2 electrical sockets inside our room. There was also one in the veranda. If your group is many like us bringing an extension wire or a triple cube adapter is highly advisable.
There was no WiFi connection at the resort, so we had to resort to our Mobile Network which I am happy to tell you that Globe has an H+ signal which we used to upload some photos and videos.

The Food
You can order food from their restaurant. The food was good too with a generous serving.
A little warning though, be very patient or better yet order your food in advance as they really do take their time to prepare.

Sizzling Chicken for 200 Pesos/order good for 4 persons. Without rice.

Chopsuey – 200 Pesos/order for 4 persons. Without Rice.
Rice was priced 20 Pesos/cup.
Night Time
Just in case you were curious what it is like in Matutinao Beach Resort during night time.
5 Activities to do from Matutinao Beach Resort
1. Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church
If you are into churches you may want to visit this church which is just located in front of Matutinao Beach Resort.
2. Lambug Beach
If you are into beaches I would highly recommend you visit here.
You can get here via habal-habal for 50 Pesos/person (one-way) from Matutinao Beach Resort.
3. Kawasan Falls
Kawasan Falls is actually the end part of the Cebu Canyoneering but even if you are doing the activity and have some free time, I would highly suggest that you visit Kawasan Falls.
To get there from Matutinao Beach Resort you can ride a habal-habal for 50 Pesos/person (one-way). You can also walk since it’s only 1.5 kilometers away.
Just be ready to shell out some cash for the entrance fee, life vest rental and raft rental.

4. Osmeña Peak
You can actually get to Osmeña Peak from Matutinao Beach Resort, it would be expensive though.
You will need to hire a habal-habal to get to Osmeña Peak. The rates when we were there are as follows.
- 500 Pesos/person – Roundtrip Habal-habal ride from Matutinao Beach Resort to Osmeña Peak
- 700 Pesos/person – Habal-habal ride from Matutinao Beach Resort – Osmeña Peak – Dalaguete

5. Cebu Canyoneering
This is the main reason why we were here as we wanted to try the adventurous activity known as Cebu Canyoneering. Adventure is what we wanted and adventure is what we got when we availed this with Kawasan Canyoneering.
How to get to Matutinao Beach Resort
If you are coming from Cebu City, head to South Bus Terminal and ride the bus heading to Bato via Barili. The fare is 120 Pesos/person (one-way) and travel time is around 3 hours. Earliest trip is around 4AM. Last trip is around 6PM. Bus departure interval is every 30 minutes.
Note: Do NOT ride the bus Bato via Oslob. It will not pass by Badian.
How to go back to Cebu City
Just wait for a bus to pass by going to Cebu City.

Additional Notes
There are actually stores and small canteens outside of Matutinao Beach Resort.

Kawasan Cooperative located near the church

Canteen along the highway. Almost in front of Matutinao Beach Resort
Unfortunately, in terms of fruits, especially banana was not available. (I was looking for a banana to add potassium in my body a day before the Canyoneering activity). Fortunately, you can head to the town proper of Badian where the Public Market is located where you can buy fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. You can get there by riding a jeep for 10 Pesos/person. Habal-habal for 100 Pesos/person. Bus for 20 Pesos/person.

Conclusion
What I like about Matutinao Beach Resort are the following.
- Accessible to many points of interest (Lambug Beach, Kawasan Falls, etc.)
- Beach front
- Simple rooms but do not expect too much
- Strong water pressure
- Good food with generous servings
- Strong Mobile Signal (H+ for Globe)
- Ample amount of electric sockets in the rooms
I would highly advice that you stay here at Matutinao Beach Resort when you plan to do the Cebu Canyoneering activity so that you would be well rested before the activity.
We actually stayed 2 nights at the resort because we were really tired after and we really took our time during the Canyoneering. The decision was mainly for us to have the strength and time to visit Osmeña Peak the next day.
If you ask me if I will stay here again, my answer would be Yes! I will stay here again.
