Pounding My Way to Eat the Tinomok

April 21, 2012 by Josiah 2 Comments

Ever had food that you had to pound just to eat it?

I was fortunate to have relatives at Eastern Samar that planned to make Tinomok after I went around Guiuan.

Tinomok in Eastern Samar is a dessert whose ingredients are pinipig, coconut meat and sugar. Knowing the ingredients is just a tiny part of Tinomok, the big chunk is the experience of making it.

Gather ripe palay.

Put it in a kaldero with a fire underneath. Mix and wait until many pop.

Place the popping palay to a Lusong.

Then pound it with your friends using a bayo.

Lusong is a big mortar where palay is pounded by a big pestle, which is the bayo.

12 for 2012 Travel Project

January 14, 2012 by Josiah 39 Comments

Since Lakas ng Trip is turning 2 years old this coming February I decided to take a leap of faith by leveling up this travel blog with a travel project. I present to you my 12 for 2012 Travel Project.

What’s 12 for 2012 Travel Project?

12 for 2012 stands for 12 local destinations for the year 2012. Each month of 2012 I will be travelling to a place here in the Philippines to establish contacts, create detailed travel guides and create budgets & itineraries to help travellers plan their trips on the places that I will visit.

Why are you doing this?

One of my goals is to encourage Filipinos to travel around our country. The more we travel, the more we will see how special the beaches, mountains, waterfalls and our culture is and how great a country we have.

I want to tell you how beautiful places in the Philippines are, but I want to tell you more on how to get there, what you can do, where you can stay and where you can eat for you to be able to personally experience how magnificent it is to travel around the Philippines.

What mode of travel will you be doing?

BackpackingThe mode of travel that I do is backpacking and that’s what I also encourage people to do. Backpacking is a form of travel that supports small businesses such as tricycles, jeepneys, bangkas, sari-sari stores, affordable lodgings and karinderyas. The more you do backpacking in the Philippines the more you help Filipinos to have a sustainable income for a living.

Backpacking is also a form of travel that also supports your thirst for an adventure by not eating much of your hard-earned money but still provides you with the same great experience. Plus you also get to know more about the places you visit by talking more with the locals.

But that does not stop this blog from featuring comfortable alternatives. The goal is for Filipinos to travel regardless of the type of travel you do.

What are the 12 places you plan to visit for 2012?

Since we were touring around the beaches of Calicoan Island, we saw this resort that has no sign board in front. Curious as I am, I went in hoping that there were no dogs and asked if the Calicoan Villas was a resort open for travellers.

Calicoan Villa Resort & Restaurant

It was a good thing that there were no dogs inside and the Calicoan Villas is a resort that is open for travellers like me. In fact, Calicoan Villas Resort has a much affordable rate than the nearby Surf Camp Resort. Check the Rates below to see how much is their rooms are.
